Murray Fredericks: Salt

In his first UK solo exhibition, Murray Fredericks presents Salt, thirteen large format colour photographs captured during Fredericks' long and challenging journeys to Lake Eyre in South Australia.

The project commenced in 2003, with Fredericks travelling alone using only a bicycle and trailer to carry his large format camera, supplies, water and tent. Navigating this vast area of dry land in extreme weather conditions can take both a physical and mental toll on an individual.

Each pigment print in the project is related by the placement of the horizon running across the lower third of the frame. Often this is the only referential form providing the viewer with an element that paradoxically defines space and denies total abstraction.
