Nick Waplington’s Self Portrait with Cindy Crawford and Isaac Mizrahi, 1990 will be featured in the exhibition My Amazing Friends curated by Kim Hastreiter at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York City.
Kim Hastreiter, best known as the co-founder of the beloved PAPER magazine, has spent her entire five-decade career identifying, participating in, documenting, and helping to create explosive cultural movements that began in downtown New York City and quickly spread throughout the world. She has also amassed a vast and iconoclastic collection of amazing art, fashion, design, photography, books, and ephemera.
Kim invited over 60 of her amazing artist friends, who are in her new book STUFF: A New York Life of Cultural Chaos and in her collection, to submit a piece of art that Kim loved. These artists reflect Kim’s incredibly keen eye, eclectic collection, and friendships that she’s amassed over the years. Her amazing friends in the show range in age from 27-87 years old. Some of the artists are legendary, some are deceased, and some are lesser known and have not yet been discovered.
Waplington’s photograph in the show comes from the period between 1989 and 1993 where he was granted rare backstage access to photograph every detail of the designer Isaac Mizrahi’s fitting sessions in the weeks before his twice-yearly fashion shows. Waplington and Mizrahi were introduced by Richard Avedon (another Hamiltons-represented artist) and Waplington captured behind-the-scenes images of Mizrahi fitting some of the biggest supermodels in the world, including Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.
Hamiltons are delighted to show Nick's Self Portrait with Cindy Crawford and Isaac Mizrahi in our current exhibition, From the Roster.
My Amazing Friends runs from February 8–22, 2025 at Jeffrey Deitch, 76 Grand Street, New York.
